Vedhla earrings

Vedhla are traditional earrings made of silver or gold, consisting of a circular upper hoop, a central rod, and a cubic or rectangular pendant. They are typical of Rabari culture and other communities in Gujarat.

Among Vaghadia Rabari women from Kutch, it is common to wear multiple Vedhla in each earlobe up to six on the right and five on the left resulting in visibly elongated lobes under the weight of the jewelry.

The use of Vedhla is not merely decorative; it symbolizes community belonging and endurance, as the earlobes must bear both the physical and symbolic weight of the earrings.

In certain areas of Gujarat, Vedhla are also worn in the upper cartilage of the ear.

The act of wearing Vedhla is deeply connected to rites of passage and ceremonies, serving as a gesture that transmits the memory and nomadic identity of the Rabari community.
